Friday

We were all over the place today.

To start with, we went into town for Katie's first allergy shots. Because she was so good for the testing, I thought that she was over her needle phobia and would be okay with the shots. Wrong. She was fine until the nurse came in with the two needles, and then she started talking fast and Desperately, insistently wanting to know why she had to have these shots, exactly how much they were going to hurt, what the purpose of the two different bottles was, why it wasn't okay for her to just Keep her allergies, etc., etc. It didn't matter what we answered, of course, because every time the nurse started to ready the needles Katie started again with, "But wait! PLEASE just let me ask .....!!" Finally we told her that the time for questions was up, and she had to sit still. I held her on my lap, but she struggled. The nurse explained that if she didn't sit still, the other nurses would come in and pin her down, and they would be grumpy about it because it was their lunch time. Katie didn't want that, of course, and she did try to hold still, but she had worked herself into such a terrified, hysterical frenzy that it was pretty awful. And then it was over, and she had to admit (even with a little smile) that the needles hadn't actually hurt very much. Thank goodness that we had a sweet, patient nurse. Next week's shots will be administered at our regular GP's office, and his nurses are Not patient, so I hope she has gotten all the naughtiness out of her system.

We had lunch and ran a couple errands and then came home to find a message on our machine from a friend inviting the kids over. Travis and I had been planning to finish up our math and Latin, but we decided to go play instead.

The kids played and Ed and I drank coffee and socialized. Our friend had just gotten the most recent Rainbow Resource catalog (which I haven't gotten), so we spent some time talking curriculum (which is so often more amusing than actually using curriculum!).

Tonight was the last night of the vacation Bible school the kids have been attending since Sunday with the Baptists next door. They've had a marvelous time, coming home every night all excited about the fun activities they've been doing, crafts they've been making, and food they've been eating (You can guess which child has been giving us detailed descriptions of the gourmet delights provided for snack time. The child waxes Rapturous over corn dogs.) This was Parents' Night, and the children performed the songs they've been practicing and received participation certificates. The presentation was very nice, if a bit long, and I was pleased that Katie, my sometimes shy baby, went up front despite her stage fright. She even did the hand motions, of which there were an almost comical number. Then the show was over and we had homemade ice cream and got to thank the children's teachers. It was really very nice. The butter pecan ice cream was very good, but I make better chocolate.

(Yup. Hand motions all the way through. I think it must be a Baptist thing, and my poor uncoordinated Episcopalian children have a hard time keeping up with them.)

Y'all have been busy.

I, too, love mulling over the possibilities for the coming year. Everything sounds great before you use it.

oh i have undergone the same needle fearing struggles of my own with my daughter. A nurse introduced me to a product called emla. I was so grateful. It's a cream you rub on the skin that temporarily numbs the area so that you dont feel a thing for the shot. It has made immunisations for the little ones miles easier.

Wisteria,
Yup. Homeschooling would be Perfect if it weren't for the students!

Olive,
Thank you! I was told about the emla cream and asked Katie's doctor for it, but he refused. Something about not wanted to confuse a possible reaction to the emla to a shot reaction? I think he just thinks she is making a big deal of nothing and will just get used to it. Unsympathetic so-and-so. But thank you for your suggestion!

Gah, I'd go for the emla, myself! Give Katie a big hug for me. I'm proud of her (although I did get a chuckle out of the way she stalled - she is such a cutie!) She'll appreciate life-without-allergies so much when this is all over.

You made me laugh w/ the hand motions. I'd forgotten about that, but yeah, I think it is a Baptist thing. I grew up Baptist and was sure every children's song had hand motions to go with it. Not so much with the Lutheran and Presby churches we attend now. My kids would be SO lost trying to keep up w/ the hand motions. Good job, kids!

I got my Rainbow Resource catalog last week too! It was the high point of my week, I think. ;)

Poor Katie. I hope the next round is easier on her!
