In Which We Eat Rabbit

Yesterday was our second meeting for By the Shores of Silver Lake.
This book, like all the others we've read, includes a description of a Christmas dinner. In Silver Lake, the Ingalls are in South Dakota, and they eat rabbit for Christmas. So, naturally, the ever intrepid Ma Cason provided the girls with an authentic rabbit dinner, with biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, and sweet pickles alongside, and dried apple pie for dessert. And, most amazingly, Katie ate the rabbit! Most of the little girls were squeamish about it (leaving more for the hungry boys & mommies!), but Katie gobbled down rabbit and more rabbit.

(Ma Cason cooked the rabbit in that stoneware pot on the table. It was my first rabbit eating experience too, and I was surprised at how good it was. Ed wouldn't even try it.)(Katie, waiting for her rabbit. She started out wearing her prairie clothes, but soon changed into shorts because the weather was so very warm.)After dinner, the girls learned to make tassels. You can see Katie in the back, far right. She is still eating rabbit.(Katie's tassel ended up a little greasy.)After making tassels, the girls played Red Rover and ate watermelon.Chickens.And butterflies.Ruby seems to be at the "mouthy" stage. She lay down in the pond for a while and got a nice coating of green slime on her and then came up on the porch to socialize.

Katie got a new winter coat and hat in the mail (thank you, Granny & Paba!) and, despite the heat, couldn't wait to model them.

She coveted a coat like this all last winter, and now she just couldn't be more pleased. And now she is going to sit on her sled and wait for snow!Katie's riding teacher gave us some zucchinis on Tuesday, including a three-pound "monster" zucchini. So guess what we've been eating? And I also made two loaves of zucchini bread. And my green pepper plants have been doing well, so last night we had stuffed peppers, which Everyone liked (this is officially a Miracle at our house). Chalk up "fresh vegetables from the garden" as another thing I like about summer!

Isn't zucchini yummy? I like it mostly in bread or fried in a pan, but my kids won't eat it fried.

I know some people who put it in spaghetti sauce, but I have never tried that.

Looks like lots of fun at Prairie Girls!

I like rabbit, though I haven't had it since I was a child. Poor Ed doesn't know what he's missing. :)

Jules,
My kids won't eat it either. They look in the pan and hopefully ask if those are french fries, and then are disappointed. They won't even eat it in bread (of course, they probably Would have if I hadn't told them it was zucchini bread, but I can't lie and didn't think fast enough on my feet to come up with some alternate name.).

KathyJo,
He doesn't want to eat venison either -- he is Not an adventurous eater.
