Today was good. We had hoped to have the living room finished today, but, between Lowes mixing the second gallon of paint wrong and Ed accidentally buying water based Kiltz, which didn’t thoroughly cover the paneling, it won’t be done til Monday, at the earliest. I am going to love that room, though! We picked a warm yellow, “Cottage Yellow,” for the walls, and the windows, doors, crown, and baseboards are white. The floor is oak, and I’m looking for lacy white curtains. We didn’t take down the paneling, which we had sort of wanted to do, but we decided that that would be too big a project at a time when we already have enough to work on. Anyway, it is going to be lovely.
The kids and I went down to the corner shop today and then walked down to the cemetery. It is a nice little cemetery, and the kids find reading the tombstones interesting (or, T. likes reading them, and K. likes admiring the cupids and little bunnies). Walking back, we noticed that the neighbors who were renting have definitely left. Apparently, they left last night. I was surprised, since John gave us apples from “his” tree just the day before, and impressed that people can manage to move so quickly and with so little production – for us, it was an event of epic proportions, and no one in our neighborhood could have missed the fact that we were leaving. Ed thought they were peculiar, but I thought they were okay, but I definitely won’t miss their constantly yapping little dogs.
Ed talked to Tony, who said that he thinks that the Baptist Church, which is on the other side to that house and owns the property, may move their minister in. He forgot to ask if the minister has kids.
K. and I baked brownies and apple chocolate chip cake today (the recipe was described on the hs internet board I read, and sounded too yummy not to bake), and then she was so surpassingly naughty this evening that she almost lost dessert privileges. I settled her down in the bedroom for a good talking to, and she tearfully told me that she “wanted to be good, but being bad was in my mind.” She certainly has a talent for drama, telling me woeful stories about things that have gone wrong for her lately, all to set the stage for the declaration that the only thing that could bring her consolation would be a nice slice of chocolate chip apple cake. She is something else, that kid.

If you paint over pannelling, it's pretty good to have. We actually have pannelling UNDER most of our drywall, which is sort of weird, but it works out REALLY well for hanging pictures and shelves and stuff 'cause you never have to find a stud! So, if you DO want to get rid of the pannelling in the future, I recommend just putting new drywall over it!
Ohhhh, I can't wait! I've developed a love of yellow since working on this house (seeing as that seemed to be the only color I was capable of picking out, no matter what I was shooting for - we now have a lot of yellow, and variations on the theme).
LOVE the pictures, Melora - this is almost (almost, mind you!) as good as being able to swing by and have coffee and cobbler with you and see how the house is coming. :-)
Dy
Cece and Dy,
Thank you! I like the idea of someday putting drywall over the paneling. We were a little afraid of what we might find under that paneling, anyway.
Our last house had a lot of green in it, but this one seems to want some yellow! The living room was so dark, and the yellow brightens it wonderfully. The kitchen walls are now a very light yellow, and the cabinets, with the exception of the cherry doors, are going to be a slightly darker shade of the same color. The paneling on the lower walls, though, is going to be cherry red!
It is fun to share what we are doing over the internet, but a visit would be even better!
We're going to make the cake, too! Sounded great when I read about it on the board.
That is one adorable little girl.
Andie,
Thanks! She is not always good, but she is a sweetie.
The cake is even better the next day, after a night in the refrigerator. It smells heavenly baking!
was that an invite?
Cece,
Absolutely! You might want to give us another month or so to get the house a little more together, but we'd love to have you for a visit! Just say when!
