I forgot to mention it in my last post, but there was another good thing that came out of last night’s dinner! We did some rearranging in our kitchen, and removed three large knick-knack holding shelves from one wall, and that wall that needs something. Knowing that I always want more kitchen cabinets than I have, Ed decided that we needed to buy some inexpensive cabinets from Lowes and put them up on the wall, flanking the cabinet that we moved to over the stove. While it is true that more cabinets would be nice, I am a shallow, superficial person and want my cabinets, at least the ones mounted side by side, to match. New cabinets with cherry doors to match the ones in the kitchen are not in the budget, so I thought that open shelving on either side of the over-stove cabinet would be nice. We could paint it to match the color we are going to paint the cabinets (all except those doors, of course), and I could put up some of my pretty pitchers and dishes (and also coffee cups and plates!). I think two shelves on either side would be about right. Ed has objected pretty firmly to this idea, on the grounds that open shelves would look sloppy and cluttered (never mind that this seems to be our decorating theme at present anyway!). Helen, our hostess last night, had, wonderfully, some open shelving in her kitchen. It looked just about the way I expect ours would – not designer perfect but not a disaster – and Ed thought it looked okay. He has now given his blessing to my having some open shelves on our empty wall – yay!

I took a sip just as I got to the decorating theme, and choked. It'll get better. (I don't speak from experience, mind you, just hope.)
Shelves are WONDERFUL in a kitchen, I think. And, if you really needed to free up some space, you could put cup hooks under the bottom shelf and hang (er, "display") your favorite tea or coffee mugs there.
Dhugs,
Thanks for the decorating affirmation! Not to rub it in or anything (as if I would!), but the weather here is just incredibly perfect right now!
Dy,
I love the idea of the cup hooks! The cabinets by the sink are too low to allow me to push the coffee maker or other counter top appliances under anyway, so hanging coffee cups would be an excellent way to use the space (and save me some stretching!).
