He looks like a Herman to me, but what I really mean is, what sort of bug is he? The first picture, where I used the flash, is sharper, but I like the colors in the second. He is wonderfully iridescent, isn't he?
** Oh dear. I have been informed that my pretty bug is a Japanese Beetle.
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
Shakespeare's logic doesn't hold true in this case. My bug's name makes a world of difference, and I will now hunt him and his relatives down and send them to meet their maker. Still, he is a brilliant looking creature.

Beautiful pictures! I would guess June Bug, but definitely a beetle. You could go to my favorite resource www.whatsthatbug.com. You may email them if you don't see your species, but I think they are backlogged.
These bugs will eat and kill your roses, small trees like Japanese maples and crepe myrtles etc. They will eat all the leaves off & kill them. You need to get milk spore and spread it on your grass. They lay eggs that hatch into grubs in your lawn. Then every year they emerge, and eat voraciously, and then lay more eggs. They are terribly hard to get rid of, but that would be a start. You can also knock them off your plants into a bucket of soapy water to kill them without insecticide. We had a terrible outbreak this year, bigger then the few we saw last year when we did know to treat them.Last year was the first time I ever saw them.
