Could It Be Spring?

K. and I had our "girls' night out" on Tuesday at a Pampered Chef sales party given by our neighbor's daughter-in-law (whose daughter came to K.'s birthday party). The "party" was the usual thing, but little Ashley, who is a very mature four, was taking her hostess duties very seriously, handing out order forms and pens, and making sure we filled our forms out properly (and promptly!). I thought she was a hoot, though the presenter, who had to try to talk over her, wouldn't have agreed. K. was very good, sitting very close beside me (in shy mode), but paying very close attention to everything the sales lady was doing, and whispering to me about the gadgets she thought were neat (particularly the apple peeler/corer/slicer!) and the changes she would make in the recipes. The presenter was fine, though unspectacular, but she staked her claim for the marvelousness of the baking stones (which seem to be one of the most pushed items) on how great they were for heating frozen pizzas and leftover McDonald's french fries, which didn't do much for her credibility as a cook. I bought the wisk I'd wanted, and two other little things, and K. and I left feeling fairly well entertained.
The weather has been less cold for the last couple days, and I almost think it might be spring. My little rose bushes, and some of our trees, are putting out lovely new leaves, and several daffodils have popped up in the middle of our front yard (our yard is looking quite shaggy, but I don't want to mow down my darling little daffodils). We won't be buying a lot of plants this year (not for lack of ideas of what would be fun!), but I am looking at roses for along the front fence. Wayside Gardens seems to have good prices, and a wonderful selection, but I'm a bit wary of buying my plants mail order. The other choice seems to be Walmart or Lowes, though, and they have almost no selection at all. Anyway, I'm having fun (and wasting lots of time) drooling over lovely pictures of roses on the internet and imagining how they would look draped over my split rail fence or framing my front porch steps.

I've bought bulbs by mail order before with no problem & I know other people who have got bare root plants with no problems.

Re the monty python - not the movies! They're much more over the top than the old TV shows. My kids aren't ready for the movies but the old TV episodes are great.

You know, I love PC gadgets, but I would rather die of slow, painful starvation than try to live on the diet they seem to push. For a while there, everybody was giving us PC cookbooks. OMG, talk about a marketing campaign for Pillsbury and General Mills! We just don't eat like that. In some ways, we can't (b/c of John's allergy), but even before we had that on the table, we didn't eat like that.

I'll bet K. was just adorable, and what a fun way to have a "girls' night out" - I love it!

Thanks, Hornblower! Ed was horrified when I told him our roses will arrive looking like little sticks, so I certainly hope they will do well!
I'll have to put one of the old Monty Python shows on my Netflix list. I'd love to see the one with the dead parrot again.

Dy,
You are right about the PC use of premade doughs. I don't think I've ever been to one of those events where they didn't use them, and, aside from crescent rolls once in a while, I don't. I don't have any of their cookbooks, but I looked at one, and found it very distracting that each recipe told which gadget you should be using for each step (i.e. "chop on your PC cutting board with your PC knife, then scrape into your PC mixing bowl with your PC spatula"). It was fun, though.

Do you know the rose called Margaret Merril? I is a beautifully formed white rose, tea appearance but floribunda habit, and with a delicious scent. Best white rose I know, can be hard to get in the US.

Suscipe -- Margaret Merrill is in The Rose Bible, one of my favorite rose books, and it looks wonderful. So far I've picked mostly shrubs, but I would like a few floribundas & grandifloras (Queen Elizabeth, especially), so I'll keep an eye out for MM. Thanks!
