More Water Fun

The kids and I went with friends to Stone Mountain State Park this afternoon. I had intended to get some work done on my flower bed, but it was so warm that it seemed like a good day to go splash around in icy cold water. These friends are outdoorsy people who know all the good trails and streams, and today they took us to what I think will be our favorite summer hang-out. It is only about twenty minutes from our house, and we were able to park right next to the stream, so even Ed could walk the short distance to the swimming area (and there is even a picnic table!). The only other people we saw were some fellows who stopped to ask if we knew where the trout were biting. The kids had a great time sliding down the big rock, and the water was shallow enough so that even K. could stand in it. I didn't have to jump in and rescue anyone, which was a very good thing since the water was really cold (the kids didn't seem to notice). It was a great afternoon.

K.'s dance studio is having photography people in tomorrow night to take recital pictures of the kids (the recital isn't 'til the end of April). Ed told me last Thursday that I needed to ask one of the other dance moms about the hair pieces that they decided at the last minute to add to the costumes, so, over the weekend, I did. On learning that the (optional) hair pieces are twenty-four dollars, I quickly decided that we would skip that part of the costume (K. hates stuff in her hair), but my informant, our neighbor's daughter-in-law, then went on to explain to me that the photography studio wanted the little girls to be wearing foundation, powder, blush, eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick. I know that my jaw dropped, and that something along the lines of "No Way!" passed my lips. I was kind of stunned, since these are four and five year old girls we are talking about, and I am hoping that I was not too open about my outrage, since, as it turned out, my acquaintance saw nothing at all wrong with painting our daughters up like strumpets (oops, did I just say strumpets?). Anyway, my little K. may look a bit washed out next to her more highly colored fellows, but at least I will recognize my baby.

Let the strumpeting begin! ;-) Actually, I look back on all my ballet photos, and the backstage and pre-performance shots do look hideously garish. On stage, with the lights, we all looked like normal young girls or butterflies or whatever we were for that particular recital. But WHY the photos need to include all the stage stuff I don't know. They don't look good even several decades later.

What a WONDERFUL little hidey hole you have there! WOW. I love it! I would live there all summer long if I had that in my back yard! WOW. You'll be the Picnic Packing Master by the end of summer, no?

Ooooh, the dance studios. *sigh*

The girls, thankfully, found a wonderful classical ballet studio and things were very age appropriate and normal there. They wore makeup on stage, but that was it. The costumes were adorable and age appropriate ballet-y things.

We let Maddie take a class with her best friend at The Other Place one year -- EEEEK. Sleazy costumes (yes, I did say that lol) garish make up and tasteless music. It was just awful, and I couldn't RUN fast enough from that place when it was over. Blech.

Now they've both given up all their dancing, though, sports, you know...and I miss the little pink leotard days!

You know, I don't think it would bother me quite as much if the make-up was for a real performance. Then it might be part of the costume (but I still wouldn't put foundation on my baby). For photos in the dance studio, though, which they will want to sell to me, I think it is unnecessary. I'm really glad to hear that it is and has been common practice, though, and that we didn't just pick a weird studio!

I said the same thing, Dy. I would never get anything done in the yard if that stream were within walking distance of our house. The kids have told Ed all about it, and now he is looking forward to going back with us.

LOVE THAT PARK!! I want to slide down that rock! What a fun summer you guys are going to have.

I too would be outraged if a photographer wanted to 'make-up' my very little girl for a picture!! WOW!! Why on earth would a little girl need make-up?? They are so perfect and cute.

Emily,
Come visit! We'll take you to the rock.
It is good to know that we aren't the only ones who think makeup on preschoolers is absurd.
