A Most Ecumenical Summer (or, How Many VBS Programs Can We Hit in One Summer?)

We had another good day here. The kids were up-and-at-'em early to get to VBS. K. initially thought I needed to stick around, but her group had the first snack shift, and the cheering comfort of a chocolate chip cookie and a pile of pretzels gave her the courage to tell me that I could go and read at the library -- "Bye, Mommy!" I happily read my book (The Meaning of Jesus, by Marcus Borg and N.T. Wright -- really interesting!) and this month's Southern Living (now I want coneflowers and a Chinese Trumpet Creeper) until 11:00, when I could no longer bear the idea that K. might have changed her mind about not needing me, and might be sobbing inconsolably for me. I drove back and peeked through the window of the room where K.'s group was doing music. She was smiling happily, singing, and shaking a maraca, not missing me a bit. The snack ladies offered me sugary consolation, and I read 'til 12:00. I am really sold on this vacation Bible school thing! I've heard that the Methodists have a great program that starts in a couple weeks...

We had waffles tonight. In my picture you can see my assistant chef and also some of the progress on the tiling job. If tomorrow's tile work goes well, I may be grouting by Friday -- hooray!

Nothing like a happy kid, a sugary drink and a good book...
