She Does Know the Twelve Sons of Jacob, Anyway

One of the review questions yesterday in Katie's Bible study was, "Who were the first man and woman?"
Katie's answer: "Homer and Marge!"

Despite this, Katie is now officially a first grader, having finished her Explode the Code 2 book . She was very pleased, and Travis was so proud of his little sister. He told everyone at the doctor's office that his sister is a first grader!

And here is Katie reciting "After the Party," with the pacing and expression of a news anchor reporting on a major crisis. (I interupted her while she and Ed were playing baby dolls and Barbies to ask her to recite, and she was willing but not exactly eager.)

After the Party by William Wise

Jonathan Blake
Ate too much cake,
He isn't himself today;
He's tucked up in bed
With a feverish head,
And he doesn't much care to play.

Jonathan Blake
Ate too much cake,
And three kinds of ice cream too --
From his latest reports
He's quite out of sorts,
And I'm sure the reports are true.

I'm sorry to state
That he also ate
Six pickles, a pie, and a pear;
In fact I confess
It's a reasonable guess
He ate practically everything there.

Yes, Jonathan Blake
Ate too much cake,
So he's not at his best today;
But there's no need for sorrow --
If you come back tomorrow,
I'm sure he'll be out to play.

*She did get the number of pickles wrong. We'll work on that.

Homer and Marge! That is hilarious!

Can I ask what unit of Tapestry of Grace you are starting with? Did you buy the books too, or will you use the library?

This is one of my choices that I keep debating. It looks wonderful but the expense is holding me back.

Did you ever consider Sonlight?

Sorry for all the questions! I am just so torn about this decision and I value others' opinions.

Thanks!

Dy,
She is a good little thing, mostly!

Jules,
We are starting with Yr 1, Unit 1. We didn't finish SOTW 4 (we got bogged down), but I wanted the kids working together and I didn't want Katie starting with Modern History. It Does look good, doesn't it? I've made notebooks for each of the kids, so everything is ready to go, and I Think we are going to enjoy it. Some aspects of the theology bother me a little, but I think we'll be able to work around them.
I did look at Sonlight, and I Wish it were organized around the 4 Yr/3 X cycle through history. I love their literature selections -- I like many of their fiction choices better than what TOG has. But I can't see having the kids working in two different periods of history when I don't have to. Even though I only have two, I want them working together as much as possible. And the upper level TOG material looks challenging (in a good way).
We are borrowing a lot of the books from the library, but TOG Is expensive. I will have a better idea of whether the cost was worthwhile after we use it this year!

Thanks for the info!

I like a lot of Sonlight's literature choices, too, and I really like their Language Arts. The only thing is that I know I will be doing at least two cores at the same time, and at some point in the future, possibly three cores. That seems impossible to me.

TOG seems so much more appealing because of the kids learning the same things at the same time.

If I don't commit and make the purchase before your school starts, then please keep me updated on how it's going! I would love to hear from someone who is using it for the first time.

Thanks again for the info!
