Which is Worse?

Ed was sitting in the orthodontist's office with Travis today, and struck up a (brief) conversation with the woman sitting near him.  He had admired how calm and patient she was with the irritable young man she was waiting with, and after he had left the room Ed asked if the young man was her son.  Nope.  He was her boyfriend.  Ed told me the story this evening, and I said that that was an even worse foot-in-mouth than when he asked a woman when her baby was due and she wasn't expecting.  He still thinks that the baby comment is worse.  What do you think?  Would it be worse to be mistaken for your spouse's/boyfriend's mother, or be thought to be pregnant when you weren't?  Either way, Ed has learned another topic to avoid in conversations with strangers!
