Monday

I led our homeschool book group's discussion of Rascal this morning and it went very well. Much better than I'd expected. We had the full group in attendance (including a couple who have been disruptively rowdy in the past), but I assigned seating (placing girls strategically between the boys) and everyone behaved beautifully. Not only that, they had intelligent things to say about the book. It was fun.

I bought marshmallows, graham crackers, and Hershey bars today, and tonight after dinner we inaugurated the burn barrel. The kids have been wanting to toast marshmallows over a fire, and with the cold-but-not-too cold weather we've been having it seemed like the thing to do.

It took a while to get the fire going, but once it did it blazed nicely.Just give Katie chocolate and marshmallows and a fire to admire and she is completely happy.Travis is no longer capable of smiling normally when he sees a camera pointed his way. Do you think this is a ten year old boy thing?

It looks all very warm and cozy. I love s'mores on a cool fall evening by an open fire.

About Travis: Yes, it is a ten year old boy thing. But wait until he's fourteen. Then he won't smile at all for the camera, he'll stand there looking intense. Sigh. I miss the toothy smile!
