A Little History, a Little Penguin Smacking

Since there were no Martin Luther King Jr. parades going on nearby (at least that we knew of), we stayed home and did school. We did watch the "I have a dream" speech on Google, and discussed segregation and non-violent protest. T. found the speech very interesting, and particularly liked the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. He was sure it was a lake, and, when I explained that it was something like a huge, shallow swimming pool, he was even more impressed. A trip to Washington D.C. would make a really great field trip!
Ed took T. to piano tonight, but didn't bring him home. I was a little taken aback by this, but was very pleased when he explained that Blake, the teacher's eight year old grandson, had been at her house, and T. had been invited to stay a while and play (or watch Sponge Bob, which maybe counts as bonding for eight year old boys). It is putting a hitch in my dinner plans, but I've been losing sleep (literally) over my poor lonely boy's friendless condition, so I don't mind that we won't be having dinner together, just this once.
I found a new fun and completely non-educational penguin game today on my favorite homeschooling board, and am providing the link so as to share the joy! My high score was 312.

Oh yeah. I saw that on the boards today and have been smacking penguins, off and on, since I started supper. FUN!

I'm so glad T made a buddy. Spongebob really does count at bonding at this stage. It's odd, but it works. I hope he comes home filled with enthusiasm. Part of my goal in biting the sports bullet here is that it would be very nice to have friends who live on this side of the river. You'd think we're asking friends to cross Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin to come down this way. *sigh*

We did the same thing for MLK Day. Isaac was thoroughly unimpressed.

"All my friends are outside playing, because it's MLK Day, and I'm inside watching a speech by MLK. Uh, not fair."

Myrtle,
The sad part is that I got my 312 the first time I hit the penguin. It was a fluke, and I haven't managed to get above 250 since.

Dy,
I think that is a very good reason to take up baseball. We've considered doing the same thing, for the same reason, and, unlike John, T. has no interest at all in sports.

Sarah,
Your problem was that Isaac knew that other kids were getting a holiday! While I would Love to have neighborhood kids for T. to play with, the upside of not having them is that I can teach during federal holidays and teacher workdays without hearing complaints.
